Numerous successful industrial applications worldwide, including the project experiences of Optimal Systems Engineering, show that implementation of Pinch Analysis typically enables industries to maximize energy efficiency and cost savings, often resulting in an attractive payback period of less than three years.

This workshop aims to equip participants with the competency to apply the Pinch Analysis techniques and tools to target, design, and retrofit energy systems, analyze thermal energy losses from the processes, evaluate options to improve energy recovery, and analyze energy and cost-saving potentials. Toward this end, participants will be trained to perform calculations, use spreadsheets, and also be introduced to our proprietary Optimal Heat software. Additionally, the workshop will provide key guiding principles for the retrofit of industrial energy recovery systems to maximize energy efficiency and minimize energy costs.

Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the benefits and application of heat integration.
  2. Understand the basic concept of heat integration and Pinch Analysis.
  3. Target maximum energy recovery by using Composite Curves and Problem Table Algorithm.
  4. Apply Pinch Analysis rules to achieve the maximum energy recovery target.
  5. Familiarize yourself with Optimal Heat software for heat integration.
  6. Understand the importance of heat exchanger network retrofit.
  7. Apply the steps to perform heat exchanger network retrofit.
  8. Perform a retrofit case study.

Prof Ir Ts Dr Zainuddin Abdul Manan

Professor Zainuddin Abdul Manan is a leading figure in chemical and energy engineering, renowned as the founding director of UTM’s Process Systems Engineering Centre (PROSPECT) and the UTM spin-off OPTIMISE Sdn Bhd. With over 25 years of experience as an engineer, academic leader, and consultant, he has completed over 100 R&D and consultancy projects, authored over 450 publications, and holds numerous patents. He is a recognized global expert in energy and resource conservation, serving as a chartered engineer, Fellow of IChemE and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, and a certified energy manager. Zainuddin’s initiatives have driven significant energy savings and accolades for UTM, including the ASEAN Energy Award and a top global ranking in SDG7.

Prof Ir Ts Dr Sharifah Rafidah Wan Alwi

P.B.S, PEng, CEng, MIChemE, MIEM, REEM, CEM

Professor Ir Ts Dr. Sharifah Rafidah Wan Alwi is a prominent figure in chemical and energy engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, where she was Director of the Process Systems Engineering Centre for a decade. She co-founded Optimal Systems Engineering Sdn Bhd, a UTM spin-off specializing in resource minimization. With extensive involvement in 80 research and 17 industrial projects, she has developed seven resource minimization software and trained over 300 engineers. Her accolades include the Green Talents Award, ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women, and multiple national and international recognitions. Sharifah is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Cleaner Production and has held leadership roles in various scientific and engineering organizations.

Associate Prof Ir Dr Lim Jeng Shiun

PEng, CEng, MIChemE, CEM, REEM, CEA, AEMVP

Associate Professor Ir Dr. Lim Jeng Shiun is the Director of Products and Services at Optimal Systems Engineering Sdn Bhd, a UTM spin-off focused on energy conservation and GHG emissions reduction, and the Deputy Director of PROSPECT at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He specializes in process systems engineering for resource conservation and carbon planning and holds multiple professional certifications in energy management. Dr. Lim has applied his expertise in over 35 industrial projects, helping major companies and government agencies achieve significant energy and GHG reductions. He also teaches MSc Energy Management at UTM and has shared his insights in a book and various industry forums.
