Partnership for Sarawak’s Goal to Lead Green Hydrogen Production and Export

Sarawak has set its sights on becoming a premier producer and exporter of green hydrogen in the region. This ambitious goal shall be driven by an R&D partnership with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), which has recently been awarded the prestigious Sarawak Premier Chair Grant to develop a sustainable hydrogen economy planning for the state.
The project, entrusted to Prof Ir Dr Sharifah Rafidah Wan Alwi and her team, which includes Prof Ir Ts Dr Zainuddin Abd Manan and Associate Professor Dr Lim Jeng Shiun, is a collaborative effort involving Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, SEDC Energy and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak. Their work will encompass a detailed demand forecast and export potential analysis, a large-scale hydrogen development plan, as well as standards and life cycle analysis for green hydrogen.
“This grant will enable us to chart a clear and actionable roadmap for Sarawak’s green hydrogen future,” said Prof Sharifah. “Our collaboration with industry leaders and academic institutions ensures that we leverage the best expertise and technology available.”
The timing of this initiative aligns with Sarawak’s hosting of the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition (APGH 2024), which recently concluded in Kuching. The event attracted stakeholders from across the green hydrogen value chain, fostering discussions and partnerships crucial for the region’s hydrogen economy.
The Sarawak government has been proactive in positioning the state as a green energy leader. The emphasis on green hydrogen aligns with global trends towards sustainable energy solutions and leverages Sarawak’s abundant renewable resources. With this strategic focus, Sarawak is poised to become a significant player in the green hydrogen market, contributing to both regional and global energy transitions.
SEDC Energy’s involvement ensures that the initiatives will be aligned with the state’s broader economic and environmental goals.
The development of a green hydrogen economy is expected to bring numerous benefits to Sarawak, including job creation, technological advancements, and increased export revenues.
